A consecrated virgin is a woman who has never married and does not feel called to the vocation of marriage nor consecrated religious life.
She dedicates her perpetual virginity to God and is consecrated to God through the diocesan bishop.
It is a permanent state of life, a vocation which is lived in a secular state, individually and professionally in a work suited to her gifts and interests.
She provides for her own needs. The local diocese does not bear any financial responsibility but offers spiritual and pastoral accompaniment.
"Secular institutes are themselves an act of courage that the Church made…. And the good you do for the Church is very great. It is done with courage, for one needs great courage to live in the world.
Many of you are alone, many come and go in your apartment; some of you live in small communities.
Every day you live the life of a person in the world, and at the same time, retain contemplation....." -Pope Francis, May 2014
“Societies of apostolic life resemble institutes of consecrated life; their members, without religious vows, pursue the apostolic purpose proper to the society and, leading a life in common as brothers or sisters according to their proper manner of life, strive for the perfection of charity through the observance of the constitutions.” cf: Code of Canon Law 731.1.2
